Biografia

Luca Aquino, tra i musicisti jazz italiani più apprezzati nel panorama internazionale, 

inizia a suonare all’eta’ di diciannove anni. Lo spirito del viaggiatore è allo stesso tempo metafora perfetta del suo percorso artistico ed 

espressione della sua cifra stilistica. Il suo percorso artistico trova conferma nel 

2007 quando pubblica con Universal Music Group il suo primo album da leader 

“Sopra le Nuvole” e un anno dopo, con ospite Roy Hargrove e Maria Pia De Vito, 

registra “Lunaria” con cui vince il premio “Top Jazz” promosso dalla rivista 

specializzata Musica Jazz. Nel 2009, registra “Amam” nell’antico bagno turco di 

Skopje (Macedonia) e Tsc in una chiesa in Olanda; nel 2010 arriva “Icaro Solo”, 

registrato, in solo tromba, in una chiesa in Benevento. Intreccia numerose 

collaborazioni con musicisti e artisti di fama mondiale; degna di nota è quella con 

l’artista Mimmo Paladino che lo portano allo registrazione di Chiaro, un lavoro in 

trio con una sezione ritmica norvegese e un ospite d’eccezione: Lucio Dalla. Nel 

2012, dopo un importante progetto dal vivo con Jon Hassell, realizzato a nella 

Chiesa di Sant’Agostino, entra a far parte del quartetto del batterista Manu Katché e insieme a loro registra due album. 

Nel 2013 insieme al fisarmonicista Carmine Ioanna registra aQustico per la Tuk Music e intraprende un tour mondiale. 

Il 2015 è l’anno del suo settimo album da band leader: OverDOORS, personale tributo alla sua band preferita, The 

Doors. Dopo aver diretto il “Pozzuoli Jazz Festival”e il “Bari Jazz”, il 7 aprile del 2016 partecipa all’evento “Manu & 

Friends” condividendo il palco dell’Olympia di Parigi con Sting, Richard Bona, Noa, Stephan Eicher, Raul Midon e Tore 

Brunborg. Il 2016 vede anche la realizzazione e commercializzazione dello speciale modello di tromba firmato 

“aQuino”, realizzato insieme all’artigiano olandese Hub Van Laar. 

Le sue influenze musicali hanno radici nei primi ascolti di Baker e Davis, a buon diritto gli valgono l’appellativo di 

‘apostolo del Miles elettrico” (Francesco Prisco, Il Sole 24 Ore), ma anche nel rock dei Doors, degli AC/DC, in quello 

di Jefferson Airplane, Muddy Waters, Led Zeppelin e si riflettono in progetti che spaziano tra diversi generi musicali: 

dal jazz all’hip hop, dalla musica elettronica fino al grunge e alla musica d’autore. 

La passione per la sperimentazione sonora e le registrazioni in luoghi insoliti sono tra gli aspetti più sottolineati dalla 

stampa di settore che lo descrive come “l’esploratore sonoro contemporaneo”, analogamente la critica estera 

riconosce in lui quel particolare tratto italiano che nell’immaginario internazionale richiama il viaggio, la creatività, 

l’estro visionario e la bellezza. Il luogo e la storia assumono un valore speciale e sono al centro di alcuni tra i suoi 

migliori progetti e del festival da lui ideato e diretto, “Riverberi” che utilizza l’acustica naturale di luoghi storici come 

elemento centrale della performance. I tour mondiali vanno di pari passo con l’amore per il territorio e il suo Paese, 

coincidono con la spinta del viaggiatore che tende verso l’altrove per tornare a casa con i tesori fatti di esperienza e di 

suono. Straordinario progetto a sua firma è la registrazione di un album nel sito archeologico di Petra in 

collabarorazione con l’Orchestra Nazionale Giordana. Il progetto “PETRA” ha visto il coinvolgimento di partner 

prestigiosi quali l’UNESCO Amman Office, il Petra Development and Tourism Authority e la Talal Abu-Ghazaleh 

Organization. Un’iniziativa senza precedenti promossa all’interno della campagna mondiale #UNITE4HERITAGE, 

lanciata dall’UNESCO a difesa del patrimonio artistico e culturale dai crimini di tipo terroristico. 

Registra la colonna sonora del film “Fortunata” – vincitore del David di Donatello – 

diretto da Sergio Castellitto su una sceneggiatura di Margaret Mazzantini con Jasmine 

Trinca e Stefano Accorsi. Il 2017 vede Aquino rinunciare, per via di un infortunio, al 

suo Jazz Bike Tour, che avrebbe previsto un tour di cinquanta concerti consecutivi, da 

affrontare bicicletta da Benevento a Oslo. Nel 2019, dopo due anni recupera due 

infortuni concecutivi al settimo nervo del faciale, registra e viene pubblicato con 

l’etichetta discografica ACT MUSIC, il suo nuovo album “ItalianSongbook”. 

Nel 2021 realizza il progetto “GONG”, dedicato alle storie di grandi pugili, partecipa, 

con la sua musica, alla realizzazione del video Oplontis “L’incoronazione di Poppea” 

con la regia di Alessandro Alatri, realizzato nel sito Unesco Parco Archeologico di 

Oplontis, realizza il suo nuovo progetto green “Natura in Musica”, in collaborazione 

col WWF, e il progetto europeo JaWo Music Residencies ideato per la formazione di 

giovani musicisti. 

Nel 2022 realizza il progetto “Gadara” con l’orchestra nazionale giordana, in un 

teatro romano nel sito archeologico della città giordana di Umm Qais, con una vista spettacolare sul lago di Tiberiade, 

all’incrocio di diversi sentieri e paesi: Israele, Giordania, Siria, ma anche Palestina e Libano. Un brano del progetto 

“Gadara” è stato poi utilizzato per il nuovo film di Mimmo Paladino. 

Nel 2023, insieme ai suoi amici e storici compagni di viaggi Giovanni Francesca alla chitarra, Marco Bardoscia al 

contrabbasso e Gianluca Brugnano alla batteria, nasce il nuovo Album “Lunaria 2”, dove Aquino racconta una nuova 

storia, con sue composizioni originali e attraverso la rivisitazione di tre brani molto noti, come “Can’t Help Falling in 

Love”, resa nota da Elvis Presley, “Ironic” di Alanis Morissette e “Nature Boy” di Eden Ahbez. 

Biography

Luca Aquino is one of the most talented Italian trumpet players, known for innovative proposals and for his trumpet 

sound. Born in the town of Benevento, in Southern Italy, he wasmainly 

self-taught when he began to play the trumpet at the age of nineteen.  

The love for the sound of Miles Davis and 

Chet Baker brought him back to the study of trumpet and led himto 

devote himself completely to music. In 2007 Universal Music published his 

first album as a leader, “Sopra Le Nuvole”; and a year later he recorded 

“Lunaria”, with guest Roy Hargrove and Maria Pia De Vito, for which he 

won the “Top Jazz” award by the Italian magazine Musica Jazz. In 2009, he 

recorded in the ancient Turkish bath of Skopje (Macedonia) “Amam”, 

then “TSC “in a church in the Netherlands. In 2010, he recorded“Icaro 

Solo”, a project for solo trumpet and electronics, in a church in 

Benevento. After creating the festival Riverberi, he initiatedcollaborations 

with musicians and artists; including Mimmo Paladino that led to the 

registration of “Chiaro”, an album in trio with a Norwegian rhythm 

section, featuring Lucio Dalla as a special guest. In 2012, after a major live 

project with Jon Hassell, for the Church of Saint Augustine in Benevento, 

he joined the quartet of the percussionist Manu Katché and recorded two 

albums with them. In 2013 along with the accordionist Carmine Ioanna he 

recorded “aQustico” for Tuk Music and embarked with him on a world 

tour. 2015 is the year of his seventh album as bandleader: 

“OverDOORS”, a personal tribute to his favorite band, The Doors. 

After having directed the ” Pozzuoli Jazz Festival ” and the ” Bari Jazz ” , on April 7th 2016 he took part in the event ” 

Manu & Friends ” sharing the stage of the Olympia in Paris with Sting , Richard Bona, Noa, Stephan Eicher, Raul Midon 

and Tore Brunborg. 2016 is also the year of the production and the commercial launch of the signature trumpet 

model “Aquino”, which was handcrafted by the Dutch artisan Hub Van Laar based on Luca’s musical touch. 

His musical influences are rooted in the early plays of Baker and Davis, for which he was given the nickname of 

“Apostle of Miles “, but also in the Rock of The Doors, AC/DC in the Jefferson Airplane, Muddy Waters, Little Steven 

and are reflected in projects ranging between different musical genres, including jazz, hip hop and grunge. He is also 

known for his musical research on the natural sound, the use of electronics and his passion for musical 

experimentation in unusual places, for which he is also describedas “Innovative sonic explorer”. Similarly, the critics 

recognize in him that particular Italian distinctive artistic trait thatrecalls the journey, 

the creativity and the visionary talent. Places and stories are the core of some of his 

best projects such as ‘Riverberi’, the festival in Benevento thatsees him as the 

founder and director, which uses the natural acoustics of historicalplaces as a central 

element of the performance. The world tours go hand in hand with the love for his 

hometown. His last extraordinary project in 2015 was the recording of an album in 

the archaeological site of Petra, in Jordan, in collaboration with the Jordanian National 

Orchestra. “Petra” project saw the involvement of prestigiouspartners such as 

UNESCO Amman Office, the Petra Development and TourismAuthority and the 

Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization. An unprecedented initiative, promoted within the 

global campaign # UNITE4HERITAGE, launched by UNESCO, in defense of the 

artistic and cultural heritage by the terrorist crimes. 

After directing the “Pozzuoli Jazz Festival” and the “Bari Jazz”, on 7 April 2016 he 

took part in the “Manu & Friends” event by sharing the stage of the Olympia in Paris 

with Sting, Richard Bona, Noa, Stephan Eicher, Raul Midon and Tore Brunborg. 2017 also sees the creation of the special “Aquino” trumpet model, created together with the Dutch artisanHub Van 

Laar. Record the soundtrack of the movie “Fortunata” – winner of the David di Donatello – directed by Sergio 

Castellitto on a screenplay by Margaret Mazzantini with Jasmine Trinca and Stefano Accorsi. 2017 sees Aquino giving 

up, due to an accident, his Jazz Bike Tour, which would haveincluded a tour of fifty consecutive concerts, to be 

tackled by bicycle from Benevento to Oslo. In 2019 his new album “Italian Songbook” was released with the record 

label ACT MUSIC. 

In 2021 he participates, with his music, in the making of the video Oplontis “The coronation of Poppea” directed by 

Alessandro Alatri, made in the Archaeological Park of Oplontis and realizes his new project “Natura in Musica”, in 

collaboration with the WWF . 

In 2022, he realized the project “Gadara” with the JordanianNational Orchestra, in a Roman theater in the archaeological 

site of the Jordanian city of Umm Qais, with a spectacular view of the Sea of Galilee, at the crossroads of different paths 

and countries: Israel, Jordan, Syria, but also Palestine and Lebanon. A track from the “Gadara” project was then used for 

the new film by Mimmo Paladino. 

In 2024, together with his friends and long-time companionsGiovanni Francesca on guitar, Marco Bardoscia on double 

bass, and Gianluca Brugnano on drums, the new album “Lunaria 2” was born, where Aquino tells a new story through 

his original compositions and by revisiting three well-knowntracks: “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” made famous by Elvis 

Presley, “Ironic” by Alanis Morissette, and “Nature Boy” by Eden Ahbez.
